Saren likes low-key birthdays lately and prefers to stay home for the most part, regardless, so we didn't do much beyond opening presents and eating cupcakes. We did go out to dinner though.
I love having little traditions for birthdays and holidays. Some of them are newer and some we've been doing for ages. We've been doing number of presents equal to number of years off and on since Harper was 2. I also vaguely remember acknowledging that it was Harper's "golden" birthday then, i.e. the birthday where you turn the age that matches the date of the day you were born. This year Saren turned 15 on the 15th, so it was her golden birthday. To celebrate that fact, I wrapped the presents in gold paper with gold curling ribbon, and she had gold balloons (another recent addition to the birthday traditions), and gold cupcake liners with golden frosting accents.
Fifteen presents is a lot and I told them I'd do it until they were 20, so I'm going to have to get even more creative. Saren had 4 biggish gifts and the rest were little things like sodas and japanese candy and little whatnots. We gave her a gaming mouse, a Starcraft t-shirt, some money to buy the new World of Warcraft expansion, and an ocarina. It's blue and has a triforce on it and came with a book of Legend of Zelda songs in it. She's been playing it since yesterday and it's so awesome hearing Zelda songs wafting out of her room.
So, the balloons have been a recent addition to the birthday traditions (found on Pinterest, of course). I hang a number of balloons from the ceiling equal to the age the birthday kid is turning and at the end of the night, they pop the balloons and find a dollar in each one. I started it with Irina and did it with Silas and Harper, and they liked it a lot. However, Saren has always been adamantly against the practice of popping balloons (oh the tears, the tears, when she was little and a balloon died!), so she requested that the balloons not actually have the money in them. At the end of the night she pulled them all down and took them to her room, where they will live long and happy lives and die of natural causes in their sleep.
|This picture is hilarious because it looks like she's holding Silas up too.|
Happy 15th to my sweet beautiful girl.
|p.s. ratties love cupcakes too.|
