We're all moved in.

Unless you count the bits and pieces we left behind at the old house (swingset included, wouldn't fit in the truck). I'd probably make a longer post, but I'm pretty tired. Seems like I've been busy all day but I haven't really made much of a dent in the unpacking/putting away. So here's a few pictures taken in the first couple of days here in the new house.

Inching Ever Closer

Just packing, packing, more packing around here. Well, okay. We eat and sleep and use the bathroom as well. And there's a fair amount of cleaning and de-cluttering going on. And also some MarioKart and Super Mario Bros. Wii.

I still don't think I'm going to get everything done in time. Part of it is that during the day I'm limited in what I can get done because Silas needs me. Sometimes I get my mother's helpers, aka Saren and Harper, to watch him for a bit while I do something elsewhere in the house. I'm trying to relax and tell myself that things can be done after moving/truck rental day, but it doesn't change the fact that I want it all done on that day. I foresee us coming back to this house next weekend to finish things up. Oh well.

I'm so looking forward to this. All the little inconveniences and idiosyncrasies of this house that we'll be leaving behind. The ever-clogging toilet, the fake wood paneling, the oddly placed dining room. And on and on and on.

I'm also looking forward to making my house a home for once in my life. Most of the time, looking around our house (or the apartments we lived in previously), it was basically a bunch of thrown together hand-me-downs and cheaply bought discount store furniture. Nothing I've owned for my home has ever "gone together." Nothing I've owned for my home has ever been anything that would be considered quality-made. Which isn't to say that all of a sudden we'll be able to afford super-nice stuff. But we do have a tax refund coming and I think we can get a few decent things from craigslist or thrift stores. And nowadays I have much more confidence in my ability to create things (um, not like a couch or anything) to add to my home. It'll happen gradually, over time, as I come across things, make things, or have money. I have this fear that I'm jinxing myself in even saying anything about it and that the new house will be just as filled up with the same old cheap and ugly crap as it always, thoughtlessly, was. I hope that's not true.

Running Out of Boxes!!!!!

I've been packing! A lot! We had a ginormous pile of boxes, some from a strip mall dumpster, a bajillion from a friend who moved a while back and was keeping them in her garage forever and ever. And now I've got, like, eleven left. Most of them little itty bitty things. NOT GOING TO CUT IT. We went out today intending to dumpster dive for some more and found a bunch of empty dumpsters cuz, DUH, it's garbage day! Boxes=not something I want to purchase. I've never even understood why they sell them and what kind of people buy them (standard disclaimer: unless YOU buy them, you're obviously intelligent, good-looking, (a bit obtuse when it comes to buying something you can get for free), and handy with tools).

I am feeling stressed out. Looking around and wondering if I can get this all done by Friday evening, which may or may not be stupid considering we will still have access to this house even after that, for nobody knows how long because either the bank itself or our mortgage information has dropped off the face of the earth. There is still so much to do! This is why my stress dreams all involve packing! The stuff! It just multiplies and breeds even as I am trying to cram it into various movable containers!

POINT BEING. I am eating Little Debbie oatmeal marshmallow thingies (so gross! so yummy!) and drinking Jones soda under the assumption that doing so will probably make everything all right.

Photos

Two little sweetie pies.

Harper wrote some words for Irina to copy. I love how Irina wrote the 'H' in Harper as 'it' because of the way Harper dashed off her 'H'.

Irina is the only one who really lets me take her picture nowadays. Silas moves to much, and Saren and Harper either hide their faces or frown.

Book Log - October 2009

Yes, I need to catch up.

The Penderwicks on Gardam Street ~ Jeanne Birdsall
middle grade, sequel to The Penderwicks
I think I liked the first book better than this one, but I still liked this one plenty. It reminds me of the kind of book I would have liked as a girl. It's got plenty of old-fashioned charm, while still being modern. It's just the kind of book Harper likes as well, so I think I will buy this one to go with the first one that we already have, and then I will either read them to her or she can read them herself if she chooses.

This book centers on the four sisters trying to keep their father from finding romance again (because they don't want a stepmother). It has been a certain amount of time since his wife/their mother died and her wishes were that he wouldn't be alone after she was gone. There's also some puppy love, homework hi-jinks, and the always entertaining youngest sister, Batty. The dad-dating storyline is somewhat predictable in it's endpoint, but I don't know if it would be if I were 9 or 10. I'll ask Harper when she reads it.

Overall, a sweet and funny book. I've given up on a rating system for the books I've read. Grades are for meat and eggs, right? My words can give a better impression of what I thought anyway. I mean, assuming I give more than a half-assed review. Which does happen, oh well.

Nim at Sea ~ Wendy Orr
middle grade, sequel to Nim's Island
Again, not as good as the first one, but still enjoyable, I think. I read this aloud to Harper (and it's the last one we've done that with). It took forever, much to Pat's annoyance. He was always, "So, can we return Nim at Sea to the library now?" and I was all, "Um, no. Better renew it. Again." This is not necessarily an indication of how good or bad the book was. It just took a long time to get through it. This one had some saving of animals who were being taken advantage of by an evil cruise ship guy and Harper, being a big animal lover (who wants to save them all), enjoyed that part. I still really like the character of Nim quite a lot. She's resourceful and smart and stands up for what she believes in.

Tender Morsels ~ Margo Lanagan
Young Adult, fantasy
Tender Morsels is a take on the fairy tale, Snow White and Rose Red, which I wasn't familiar with before having read this book, except for the title maybe. This book was very dark, and beautifully written. In it, a young woman escapes the terrors of her real life for a sort of kind and gentle utopian version of the village she had grown up in. She raises her two daugthers (begotten through incest and gang rape) there, but eventually one of her daughters longs for more and suspects that there is a richness and fullness to life that she hadn't yet experienced. It was a book that stayed with me after I had finished it and I enjoyed it a lot. I remember being disappointed with the ending a bit, because one of the characters should have gotten a happier ending, but all in all, it wasn't necessarily the wrong ending for that character. It's probably not for everyone, because of the sexual violence in the beginning, and it's just in general a bit unusual, but definitely worth giving a shot.

Strawberry Hill ~ Mary Ann Hoberman
middle grade
This book was about a 10 year old girl named Allie who is moving to a new house during the Depression. Like the Penderwick books, it has an old-fashioned feel to it as well. However, this one is actually set in the past, though it was published last year. It's about a little girl figuring out what kind of friends are worth having. I liked the details that brought to life the time period and I liked Allie. Harper read this book as well and she also enjoyed it. It was light and fun, but it also touched on anti-semitism and the economic effect of the depression on individual families. Overall, pretty good.

Give Up the Ghost ~ Megan Crewe
Young Adult
This was a story about a teenage girl named Cass who can speak to ghosts. It wasn't really phenomenal, but it kept me interested enough to finish it. One thing that bothered me was that in the beginning Cass seemed so antisocial that it became sort of unbelievable. That was supposed to be part of her character and her development from a girl who hates everyone but the ghosts to someone who maybe might think some people are okay just wasn't very convincing to me, I guess. Still, good enough for a quick diversion.

An Abundance of Katherines ~ John Green
Young Adult
This is the third book of John Green's that I have read and, looking closer, I guess it is the third book he has written. (1. Looking for Alaska, 2. Paper Towns) I just find his writing to be endlessly charming. In this one the protagonist is a teenage boy who has always been a child prodigy, but is worried about not being special anymore as he leaves childhood behind. He's had 19 girlfriends in his life and all of them were named Katherine. With a K. The latest and greatest of them has just dumped him and he is miserable, so his friend takes him on a road trip. It doesn't last very long and the book is about what happens when they stop and stay in a tiny town in Tennessee. The narrative is nerdy in a charming way, the dialogue is funny, and the characters are fun to follow. Excellent.

It's Rainin'.

Nothing is more boring to blog about than the weather. So here goes. It rained yesterday. It rained today. It rained last week and it is supposed to rain tomorrow. It really IS the end of the world as we know it.

There are lots of ads around here that tell you not to drive through standing water. Because it doesn't rain here much the ground is hard and dry and when it does rain, the water doesn't soak into the ground, it flows down the valley. So there are a lot of flash floods and the water gets pretty deep, pretty quick. So there's always some yahoo who tries to drive through some standing water and their vehicle stalls out and they end up stranded. I was turning into our neighborhood and didn't realize that the water I was about to go through was deep until I was already almost in it (it was night-time) and there was this spout where the water was shooting up like a raging rapid. It hit the side of the van and created steam from the heat of the engine. Whoops!

Saren and I were out getting the last bits of shopping done for Irina's birthday. We'll be just finishing up our move when her birthday comes around. So she'll be opening her presents amid a bunch of unpacked boxes. I'm still not sure what we're going to do to celebrate her birthday. I want to do something fun, but the only thing that comes to mind is Chuck E. Cheese and I'm not a huge fan of Chuck E. Cheese. I'm thinking about having a party at the new house a few weeks after her birthday when we've gotten things set up.

I feel like I should have just not blogged, but oh well. I'm hitting publish anyway.

Eight Months

Silas has been in this world for EIGHT MONTHS. I know. Ridiculous. I would show you a picture but he was too mad at me for not giving him my camera to eat and I couldn't get a good shot of him. Pat got a nice smiley (grainy, cell phone) one though, right here.

T minus 13 days to moving. I should pack.

ETA: I forgot that I was meaning to record his weight on the 17th of each month. 20.3 lbs. And he has 6 teeth already, three of them only just starting to poke out, 4 top, 2 bottom.

Irina's Sense of Style

Irina loves to dress up. She changes her clothes several times a day. She never wears a skirt or dress without pants underneath. When she puts on a dress from the dress up box she says she's being a dancing queen. That's her catch-all phrase for princesses and pretty girls in dresses. She loves pink. I think she's the girliest of my girls, though her fashion sense is ...unique. This photo is from a fashion show she did for me.

Golden

Today we went to our unschooler's park day, late as usual. Five minutes after we got there, it started to rain. The girls ran around getting happily wet while Silas and I stood under a tree. The rain lasted about 20 minutes. Irina took off her socks and shoes (both wet from splashing in puddles) and ran around barefoot.

It rained once more (for about 3 minutes this time) and then, just as we were leaving we saw a big beautiful rainbow that slowly stretched itself across the sky. It started off visible only on the left side, then became a whole arch, then only the right side, then it faded away. The sun was setting while we walked to the van and the combination of that and the right configuration of the clouds made the light all buttery yellow and lovely. It felt ethereal and other-worldly. We drove away and I turned a corner and saw the whole valley bathed in that light, some of the street lights already on and dotting the cityscape, a great big pinkish orange cloud in the west, and the mountains all golden colored. That was good.

WE HAVE SEEN THE HOUSE

And it was met with approval.

There's this wide open space at the top of the stairs and we are not entirely sure what to do with it, but we've got some ideas. We've already started talking about how we're going to arrange things and what's going where and who gets what room and whatnot. There's an extra bedroom downstairs, but nobody really wants to be downstairs away from everybody else, so I am thinking that it will be a playroom.

It will be SO AWESOME to have the washer and the dryer in the same room!

Also, I don't know if I mentioned before that they were thinking of taking their fridge with them, but they decided not to. So glad we don't have to worry about moving our crappy refrigerator.

Okay, I don't like the carpet, which is pink. I can seriously live with that. So not a big deal.

Now it's starting to hit me that we're really going to be moving. We've lived in this house for 7 and a half years. That's a pretty long time. That's almost as long as I lived in my family's first Las Vegas house from age 13 to 21, which is the longest I've lived in any house. I had two babies in this house. I hope some of that good energy stays here and brings the house good luck. In the form of someone who can afford to fix it up and love it.

Silas's Awesome Pants

Aren't those pants awesome? Also, Silas can stand up with help from the coffee table now. Also, there's an empty Nerds package under the table in this picture. Classy.

Pie Successful.

I made the pie today instead of yesterday. It was pumpkin. Harper declared it the best pie she'd ever had. So I guess that was a success. I used Annika's pie crust directions and the crust turned out so. very. yummy. Seriously. I don't think I've ever had as good a crust in my life. I'm not even sure it's supposed to go with pumpkin, but it was nummy nummy good.

I set up the router today and Saren was finally able to connect her DSi to the internet, which is something she's been wanting to do since she got it. We also reconnected the Wii to the internet and did some MarioKart racing. If anyone reading has MarioKart for the Wii and an internet connection for it and would like to race with us, give us your friend code and we can give you ours. Racing remotely with people we know was something we were looking forward to when we first got MarioKart, but somehow that never came to fruition.

We're finally going to get a look at the inside of the future house on Friday. And I think we'll do the actual moving on the 30th and 31st. Haven't heard anything from the bank for awhile.

Insert your own conclusion here, because I can't think of one.

Tuesday, January 05, 2010

Wow. This screen is big.

Woo to the hoo! The computer arrived and I am using it now. I may be too distracted to make a pie.

And, dude. I got one of the smallest monitors available. I think the smallest. We didn't even really need one, but I was thinking I could set up the other computer so we have two if we can get it fixed. This is ginormous. People who buy those bigger screens probably get neck strain from trying to see the whole thing.

I still do want pie. Probably won't be able to get started on that until Pat gets home due to Silas being grump supreme.

Other exciting things that have yet to be explored: photoshop, webcam, having a router again so we can play mariokart with peoples around the world, windows 7, whatever the hell that is.

Should I Make a Pie?

According to the FedEx tracking website, our computer is "on the vehicle, out for delivery." Does it lie? Will I wait all day long only to be disappointed? Will I end up staying home from park day tomorrow so that I don't worry about them leaving a freaking computer on our doorstep? Will this be the last post I have to make from this crappy laptop? Should I make a pumpkin pie even if it means I have to make the crust myself, which I have never done and it could turn out disastrous?

Ithaca is far

We drove down (up) to Panaca today to visit with my mom. On the way, listening to one of my CDs, I realized that one of the lyrics was "Ithaca is far." I rewound it (can you call it rewinding when it's a CD?) so the girls could listen to it. Because Ithaca is far and so are their friends who live there. (Dear A & E, I bought a webcam with our new computer. Love, Stephanie)

But! Panaca is close and therefore so is grandma and her not-so-new kitten and the girls' favorite dog in the world, Sierra, who I tolerate despite her clear canine tendencies. And there is snow here! Very exciting. Tomorrow there just may be snowmen. We saw some deer hanging out on the side of the road. And there were all kinds of animal tracks in the snow on the mountain range on the way up (down?). The drive gave me a bit of a headache but it's good to be here.

Squee.

Santa brought Saren and Harper some gel pens for their stockings. Being uninitiated to the joys of gel pens, I tried theirs out and discovered that some of them have glitter in them! Glitter! Gel pens are smooth and they come in colors and some have glitter! Why didn't Santa tell me about this?

So today I went to Target (which is where Santa does most of his shopping) and I picked up a package for myself. The 13 year girl inside me who dots her i's with hearts is filled with glee!

Of course the actual 13 year old girl who was me never dotted her i's with hearts. She was far too dignified. Just so we're clear.
